MTN donates to promote digital literacy in Ashanti region - Zylofongh.com
Telecoms giant MTN Ghana has reinforced its commitment to supporting STEM education in Ghana with the donation of a number of laptops and digital teaching tools to selected basic schools in the Ashanti region.
The move forms part of the company’s yearly projects to equip basic school students with relevant IT skills to improve digital literacy in Ghana.
The New Asafo M/A school in Kumasi does not have a well-equipped IT facility.
Headteacher of the school, Grace Opoku Konadu, said inadequate IT tools have compelled teachers to use their personal laptops for teaching.
This, she said, “is hampering the effective teaching of the subject and academic performance of the students
Because we don’t have computers, teachers teach I.C.T with their personal laptops, due to that controlling the class can be quite difficult
“We want to thank MTN for this gesture and we hope other corporate bodies will emulate the gesture,” she said.
The New Asafo M/A school is one of a number of public schools without the needed facilities for the teaching and learning of ICT.
In a bid to enhance digital literacy among pupils, MTN Ghana donated some IT tools to the school and other basic schools in Ashanti region.
The move is to promote education and skills development.
CEO of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh said ”the company is committed to supporting the government’s agenda to digitalize many sectors of the country including education. Our focus on the year is on I.C.T and we selected it because it has become globally important”.
He says the project would boost the ICT talent ecosystem development in Ghana.
“If we don’t start educating our students from basic level then we will be left behind in the global competitiveness at some point in the future. Our goal is to support everything the government is doing to promote I.C.T to build the necessary skills of our children”.
The exercise forms part of the company’s Yellow Care month activities.
